Guitar Synthesizer Video Demos:

CV-13 Classic "Pat Metheny" Roland GR-300 w/ ES-175
Since the VG-99/FC-300 combination has four control inputs, I am using the four controllers found on a typical Roland G-202/303/505/707/808: filter cutoff frequency, resonance, vibrato rate, and the balance control knob.
CV-13 Virtual GR-300 Performance Demo
Accomplished jazz guitarist Brad Rabuchin does his turn with the IMG-2010, CV-13 and VG-99. The virtual GR-300 becomes a reality!
CV-13 Vintage Hex Fuzz Tones!
The Hex Fuzz sound was one of the highlights of early Roland guitar synthesis. This feature was discontinued with the Roland G-707 and later guitars, but the VG-99 recreates the hex fuzz circuit.
CV-13 Tone Zila
Check out the huge range of tones that are available, simply by adjusting the guitar volume, guitar tone, and input gain to the amplifier! This mega-cool patch actually features TWO guitars, a COSM Les Paul and Classic Strat, through a Soldano and Marshall stack (respectively), and panned wide.
CV-13 Tone Zila Blues Demo
The focus of this demo is not the exotic bells and whistles of the VG-99, while it has plenty of those, but simply musical responsiveness of this incredible guitar processor.
CV-13 Mighty Morphing Guitar Tones
Pressing the virtual whammy bar down bends the pitch of the distorted guitar down. At the same time, pressing the virtual whammy bar down bends the pitch of the clean guitar up! When the balance is set at 50/50, one guitar bends down while the other bends up!
CV-13 Morphing VG-99
We had to keep notes handy to remember what-does-what on the IMG2010. With all the options that the VG-99 has to offer, coupled with the control possibilities of the CV-13, I strongly recommend coming up with one cabling configuration and being consistent.
CV-13 VG-99 and VG-88 Together
The VG-99 is connected to the Synth A output, and the VG-88 is connected to the Synth B ouput. VG-99 is panned to the left, playing a hard distortion patch, and the VG-88 is panned hard right, playing a processed clean Strat patch.
CV-13 MIDI Control with the VG-99
The VG-99 MIDI OUT is patched to the MIDI IN on a Roland XV-5080. The Filter Cutoff knob on the guitar is assigned to control MIDI volume, so Filter Cutoff controls the volume of the XV-5080, and the Master Volume on the guitar controls the volume of the VG-99.
G-808 with GR-300
In this video you can hear the dry, direct output of the G-808, with no effects. By itself, this is a sensational, versatile guitar. Later in the video, you can hear some hex fuzz samples and the G-808 used with the GR-300 with a classic Pat Metheny type tone.
G-808 with GM-70
First you hear VG-88 modeled acoustic guitar (panned left) with a saxophone patch from the Roland XV-5080, triggered by a Roland GM-70. Next is a MIDI guitar (XV-5080) again triggered by the GM-70. The older GM-70 still offers fast, accurate spot-on pitch-to-MIDI conversion.
G-808 with GR-300
This final video clip is just all about the G-808 and GR-300. Nothing sounds or plays like the G-808 and GR-300. Fast, responsive, natural, this is a guitar synth for guitar players. Brad Rabuchin plays guitar.
G-88 Direct and with GR-33B
In this video you can hear the dry, direct output of the G-88, with no effects. At first Brad cranks up the active low eq on the bass, then adds the high band active eq for some bass slapping. Next the GR-33B is added, with various filter settings, pitch offsets, and some filter modulation with resonance.
G-88 and GR-33B Filter Pedal Effects
This video clips highlights using the GR-33B with the filter pedal, which allows the player to sweep the filter. I noticed the GR-33B has a "Mu-Tron" vintage filter sound. The GR-33B offers both -12 dB and -24 dB filter effects. Notice how well the GR-33B tracks everything Brad plays.
Pat Metheny plays the G-303 and GR-300
Brief video clip from the early nineties. Classic Pat Metheny shredding with the Roland G-303 and GR-300.

BX-13 V2 Calibration
Calibration of the BX-13 V2 is simple: turn the synth volume off on the BX-13 V2. Next, turn the filter knob on the guitar synth controller to maximum. Next, slowly increase the BX-13 V2 synth volume until your guitar synthesizer is at maximum volume.
BX-13 V2 Bass Synthesizer Control
The BX-13 V2 is used here with a Roland GI-20 driving a Roland XV-5080. I also demonstrate using the optional EV-5 pedal to create volume swells with the natural bass pickup output. The Roland GI-20 has a rear panel switch for bass operation.
G-707 and GR-300
While Pat Metheny always plays a Roland G-303 controller, the distinctive sound of Pat’s guitar synthesizer can be generated with any Roland vintage G-series controller and a GR-300 synthesizer.
G-707 with Roland VG-88
With a DC-13 this Roland G-707 guitar can access the cool sounds of the cutting edge Roland VG-88 Virtual Guitar System. In this short demo, the G-707 is used to generate a stunning nylon acoustic guitar sound.
G-707 and GI-10
In this demo, the DC-13 is used with the G-707 to play two contemporary Roland synths: the Roland GI-10 Pitch-to-MIDI converter and the VG-88 Virtual Guitar Synth.
SBC+, IMG2010, GR-300, and VG-88
A GR-300 is used with the SBC+ and a VG-88. This clip shows using the guitar controls to blend the outputs from the GR-300 and VG-88. The GR-300 is processed through external reverb and delay. The acoustic and distorted guitars come directly from the VG-88.
SBC+, IMG2010 Virtual Whammy Bar
The stock "V-Guitar" patch on the VG-88 has been modified to respond to whammy bar MIDI messages from the GM-70. At the end of the clip, front panel controls are switched on for pitch and modulation.

G-303 and GR-300
This video is a quick introduction to the sounds and features of the G-303 and GR-300. Hear samples of each of the humbucking pickups, hex fuzz, synth sounds and various other features like LFO Touch pads and Filter Modulation.
GK-1 and GR-300
This video is a quick introduction to the sounds and features of the GK-1 and GR-300. Each GK-1 control is demonstrated: CV1 filter, CV2 resonance, balance, etc, and you can hear the effect on a Roland GR-300. These videos represent an extreme of what a GK-1 can do. The system was really designed with solid body guitars in mind, but you can see it works just fine on an old acoustic ovation.
GK-1 and GM-70 with XV-5080
In this video a GK-1 is hooked up to a Roland GM-70 for pitch-to-MIDI conversion. The GM-70 then drives a Roland XV-5080 sound module. First you hear extreme synth sounds, then next patch is an expressive Soprano Sax, then finally velocity switch acoustic guitar. When playing the Ovation softly you hear harmonics, medium is standard guitar, and hard playing results in a finger slide!
VG-99 Dual Path Virtual Acoustic and Les Paul Guitars with Alternate Tuning
This demo features a virtual Acoustic and Les Paul guitar, in an alternate tuning. The GK S1/S2 toggle switch is used to turn each virtual guitar on and off.
VG-99 Virtual GR-300
The VG-99 faithfully recreates the Roland GR-300. This demo features the same pattern I played on a GR-300 and G-707 so you can compare the virtual and real vintage synthesizer sound.
VG-99 Jazzy L4 with Virtual 3-way Pickup Switch
The Warmoth Strat is a solid body guitar, but with the VG-99 it can sound like a big jazz box. I am not much of a jazz player, but this demo shows how the GK S1/S2 toggle switch design on this guitar can be programmed to mimic a 3-way pickup switch.
GR-20 Various Synth Sounds
This demo shows the Warmoth Strat with a Roland GR-20, playing some Nylon synth guitar, a little Irish fiddle music, and layering synth and guitar together.
VG-88 12 String Guitar and Electric Guitar
First, you will hear the Seymour Duncan pickups in the Warmoth Strat, then you will hear a virtual 12-string guitar generated by the VG-88. Then both guitars together, for a wide, rich 12-string plus electric guitar sound.
Seymour Duncan Pickups Clean
This demo shows of the wide range of clean guitar sounds available from this versatile guitar. A little stereo delay was added to the mix.
Seymour Duncan Pickups Distortion
This demo shows of the wide range of clean distorted sounds available from this versatile guitar. First, I use a virtual Fender Twin with just a bit of overdrive, then I switch to a Marshall stack for a harder sound.
Ovation Roland-Ready Viper - CLEAN
Ovation pioneered the acoustic/electric guitar, and it still sounds great! This is a demo of the Ovation played using the internal piezo pickup, with a battery powering the internal preamp. I added some reverb for ambiance.
VG-99 Various Guitar Synths
Unlike piezo equipped guitars, this Ovation has authentic Roland technology, so you can rely on the accuracy of the V-guitar series. In this demo I step through a series of VG-99 factory patches.
Roland GR-20 Various Patches
In this demo I play a variety of GR-20 patches. One thing I love to do is blend the synth sounds of the GR-20 with the direct guitar output of the Ovation. The Ovation is played dry, with no effects or equalization!
VG-88 Various Guitar Synths
While the VG-99 is the latest in Roland guitar synthesizer, the VG-88 still has some killer patches. I play the Space Strat sound, a Stereo Nylon guitar, Violin and a custom alternate tuning based on Bensusan by Michael Hedges.
Godin ACS SA with Roland VG-99
This demo starts with the Nylon stringed Godin guitar sounding like a Tele with a Fender Twin! Various clips follow showing the power of the Godin with a VG-99.
Godin ACS SA clean with 3-band equalizer demo
This video shows the clean sound of the Godin ACS SA, followed by a demonstration of the three-band equalizer.
Godin ACS SA with Roland GR-20
The GR-20 is perhaps the easiest to use Roland guitar synthesizer. This demo show various piano and string patches.
RC-1324-PDL, Godin ACS SA and GR-300 Various Effects
This demo shows a little bit of everything on the GR-300. You can see the super-fast response time of the Godin ACS SA/GR-300 combination.
RC-1324-PDL, Godin ACS SA and GR-300 featuring Filter Presets and Modulation
You can hear the clean sound of the Godin ACS SA, then the RC-1324-PDL switches filter presets, and various kinds of modulation are used on the GR-300.
RC-1324-PDL, Godin ACS SA and GR-300 featuring Balance Presets
Only the RC-1324-PDL has Balance Presets to instantly switch from GR-300 synth to clean sound.
VG-99 Various Guitar Synths
This Fender Roland-Ready Strat works perfectly with the latest in guitar synthesizer technology, the VG-99. Since Roland engineers work closely with the Fender company, you can rely on the accuracy of the V-guitar series. In this demo I step through a series of VG-99 factory patches.
Roland GR-20 Various Patches
In this demo I play a variety of GR-20 patches. One thing I love to do is blend the synth sounds of the GR-20 with the direct guitar output of the Strat. The Strat is played dry, with no effects or equalization!
VG-88 Various Guitar Synths
Here my friend Brad Rabuchin does a demonstration of this guitar with the Roland VG-88 guitar synthesizer. First Brad plays some acoustic licks, then you can hear a mix of direct Fender guitar and virtual 12-string guitar, plus some more exotic VG-88 patches.
Roland Ready Fender Stratocaster - Clean
Brad Rabuchin steps through the various pickup combinations in the Strat. This guitar has all the sound and tone of a Fender Stratocaster.
Roland Ready Fender Stratocaster - Distortion
This demo shows this guitar running directly through the VG-88, modeling a British Orange amplifier. The gritty sound of the Orange amp perfectly compliments this guitar.
VG-99 Various Guitar Synths
This guitar works great with the new Roland VG-99 guitar synthesizer. The VG-99 has incredible flexibility, as this demo shows off alternate tunings, unique, floating synthesizer tones, Robin Ford type biting leads, rich 12 string acoustic guitar, heavy octave synths, and supersaturated metal distortion.
Clean Lace Sensor Pickups
The beauty of this guitar is in the upgraded Fender Lace Sensor pickups. You can hear for yourself why these pickups are so popular with players: you get all the Strat tone, with none of the noise!
Lace Sensor Pickups with Distortion
This demo shows this guitar running directly through the VG-88, modeling a British Orange amplifier. The fat sound of the Orange amp perfectly compliments the Lace Sensor pickups.
VG-99 Freeze Lead Demo
This is one of my favorite VG-99 patches, so I put it in a demo by itself. Play any chord, and then wave your hand in front of the D-beam for infinite sustain. A dual modeled guitar reproduces a nice fusiony-metal lead tone.
GR-20 Synthesizer
This demo shows of the wide range of mixed synth and guitar sounds available from the GR-20.
Direct Output no Effects
This video is all about the clean, unprocessed sound of this guitar. Regardless of the internal synth electronics, this is a great sounding guitar. Peavey did not cut corners on the Predator, and the sound of this guitar is the proof.
Distortion and Reverb
This shows the Predator running through a virtual "Orange Amp" courtesy of a VG-88. The internal electronics are shielded in this guitar, and you will notice that there is almost no difference in noise from the single-coil mode, and dual (combined) pickup combination.
Accurate Tracking with the Roland GR- 20
The 13-pin synth output goes to a Roland GR-20. Brad plays a variety of patches with the GR-20, including leads, pads, sitar and more.
Roland VG-88 Guitar Modeling Plus More!
This demo shows off the VG-88 Acoustic Guitar and EM9 open guitar patches. Finally, you will hear a virtual 12-string guitar generated by the VG-88 on the right. Then Brad switches to the single-coil pickups on the guitar, panned left, then Brad plays both sounds together, for a wide, rich 12-string plus electric guitar sound.
Roland VG-99 with Freeeze/Hold Effect and MORE!
The Predator plays a variety of VG-99 sounds, starting with a patch using the freeze/hold feature on the VG-99. You also can hear the VG-99 Modal Sitar patch, and the VG-99 GR-300 synthesizer emulation.
G-505 Direct Output no Effects
This video is all about the clean, unprocessed sound of this G-505 guitar. Regardless of the internal synth electronics, this is a great sounding guitar. Roland did not cut corners on the original G-505, and the sound of this guitar is the proof.
G-505 with Distortion and Reverb
This shows the G-505 running through a virtual " Orange Amp" courtesy of a VG-88. The internal electronics are shielded in this guitar, and you will notice that there is almost no difference in noise from the single-coil mode, and dual (combined) pickup combination.
G-505 with VG-88 Space Strat
The 13-pin synth output goes to a Roland VG-88, playing the factory patch, "Space Strat." The EV-5 type control knob on the guitar is plugged into the VG-88, and the knob is programmed to control chorus level. At the end of the demo, you can hear Brad fade in the chorus effect.
12 String Guitar and Electric Guitar
First, you will hear a virtual 12-string guitar generated by the VG-88, on the left. Then Brad switches to the single-coil pickups on the guitar, panned right, then Brad plays both sounds together, for a wide, rich 12-string plus electric guitar sound.
G-505 and VG-88, Synthesizer Lead
The EV-5 type control knob on the guitar is programmed to control the attack time of the Synth Lead. You will hear Brad play with a fast attack, then a slow attack after moving the EV-5 type control knob. What is very cool is the way the sound mutates as the EV-5 type control knob is moved. Brad uses this as a musical effect.
1986 Music Video for WBRA Television
In 1986 I did a series of "cutting edge music technology" videos for WBRA television, Public TV in the Roanoke Valley. This video, "The Dog Van" features a Tandy SX1000 computer running Voyetra Sequencer Plus software with a Roland MPU-401 midi interface. The sound sources were a Roland JX-10, Yamaha TX-81Z and a Kawai R50 drum machine. My lead synth is a Casio CZ-101! Also in the rack is an Ibanez SDR1000+ Digital Reverb. Incidentally, "The Dog Van" originated as a track created with my friend Richard Jones, for his group Black Dog and the Cool Cats.
