East Side West Side

by John McLaughlin

From the Album Mahavishnu - Transcribed by Steve Vai.

"EAST SIDE WEST SIDE" FROM Mahavishnu features two smoking 24-bar Synclavier choruses by McLaughlin, followed by an incredible series of trades between the guitar and sax. John utilizes a reedy, melodica-sounding patch, making good use of its sustain. The solos were recorded live, and the first 24 bars are transcribed here.

Although based in the key of F major, the line is frequently altered to conform to the changes. This is evident at numerous points, including bars 12 (F#),20 (#C) and 21 (F#). In addition, notice the use of both half-step and whole step bends, illustrated by measures 14 and 21, respectively. Also observe the long, horn-like phrases in measures 9 through 13 and bars 18 through 21. Because the solo can be played in a number of fretboard positions, no fingerings are included.
